Giffkin jig
OK all you box makers,
I am after some advice. A friend has asked me to help sell a Gifkin jig.
it is the original MDF one with the clamp made from timber not the newer plastic ones.
it is the full, delux kit in two boxes. I understand the new kit retails for about $1500.
Thos is as new and only used a handful of times. Could someone help me to put a price on it.
cheers

Hi Brett, bit of a tuff one there. I've had my Gifkin outfit for at least ten years now, and its the newer plastic type (handles etc). I just cant tell exactly which kits those are from the pics. The new prices are
Standard jig packages (gifkins.com.au)
I have a mate down the road who has that earlier version. I looked at his once and thought happy I got the newer style. I tend to doubt you would get anywhere near that $1500 mark. My guess maybe a 1/3 of that,.......just my guess.

I agree with Paul, what you have there is only the basic kit with a few minor extras and the clamps. Nearly all the backing boards have all been used by the look of them so are of no use to anyone.
I picked up one of the newer models on here recently with quite a few extra cutters besides the cutters for doing the dovetails and paid $350 for it. Don't want to sound stingy but I think you would be lucky to get $200 for that kit.Dallas

Thanks Paul,
I mislead you I did not think it was worth $1500 I think that is what the current retail price is. We were thinking $700. but that may also be a bit high.

Brett,
+1 for the comments above. Looks like the old version of the kit.
I picked mine up virtually unused on eBay for $250 and it is the newer version. They often come up for modest prices as buyers factor in that they may need new backer boards, templates and (particularly) cutters.

OK re: Gifkin jig
I have taken more “ new” photos that show more detail and exactly what is there.
reminder that I am trying to put a price on this for a friend.
It is the old original style of jig.
Are there any big advantages of the newer version which would preclude people from buying the older version.
cheers

What is the TGBD16 1/2 cutter as it's not listed as a replacement on the Gifkins site?
Which templates do the 4 dovetail bits fit?

Re:dovetail bits and which template they fit.
I have no idea so maybe take them out of the picture.

There are no dovetail bits pictured only one box joint cutter that is labled 'TGF5' and apparently comes with 5 guide adjusting rings. Presumably it is to be used with the F5 template noted in the list of templates. There's a lot missing from the kit, virtually all the cutters, and replacing those would be a major expense.

Brett,
As Aldav says, there appears to be a lot missing from the pictures here. Each dovetail template requires two cutters (a dovetail and a straight) so for the three dovetail templates the six cutters are worth $300-$400. In addition, there should be other bits -panel raising etc that are worth at least another $250-450 depending on the kit. If these are missing, damaged or worn the value of the kit is greatly reduced.

You might be able to work out what the other cutters are from this page.
It looks like the TGDB16 1/2 is one of the straight bits probably for one of the larger templates.

Unfortunately it appears that you have only got one type of cutter (a B10 Dovetail cutter) as the packages all have the same model No. on them except the one that says TGTC Tenon cutter, but that is not a Tenon cutter in there, just looks like another dovetail bit of the same type.
Every different template has to have a dovetail cutter and a straight cutter. Unless you and your friend can find a lot more missing cutters the kit is pretty much worthless.
