    Default gifkin demo

I learned about the Gifkin jig through posts in this forum, and decided to give it a try. So the box below was done as a demonstration to introduce the Gifkin jig to American woodworkers. The step by step article has been approved for publication in American Woodworker magazine and you can see more about making this box in my blog. To make sure I gave the Gifkin a full workout, I used it for both cutting the dovetails and for making the wooden hinges with the box joint template. The boxes are shown with the Danish oil freshly applied, so so the highlights will disappear when I wipe them with a dry cloth.

Nice work Doug, love the rustic look and the hinges compliment this nicely.

Great work Doug. Like Jim said, the front edge of the lid sets off the design of the hinges nicely. Nice design!

Are you saying that the Gifkins jog does not have a presence in the States? That surprises me. I thought it would be in the States for sure.

My editors at Fine Woodworking said that they had reviewed it, but other magazines seemed to have missed it. American Woodworker was pleased at the prospect of a how-to article using it. I don't know who is selling it in the US, but it is a tool that deserves greater exposure. I was pleased with its performance. It won't take the place of real hand-cut dovetails. But there are times when you just want to work a little quicker.

Beautiful work as usual Doug. The Gifkin jig is an asset to any box maker.

mmmmm - Yum! Drool Vision! I showed the picture to everyone who came into the office yesterday morning. They were all quite taken with the wany edge on the lid and the wooden hinges, but um, sorry, didn't notice the very neat dovetails! - Philistines!!!

Thank you all for your comments. The Gifkins jig made the dovetails so easy, so perhaps it is OK to miss them. Unlike hand-cut dovetails. Those if someone doesn't notice you might feel offended or think them to be out of touch. I'm glad you all like the wany edges and the hinges. All this stuff is so much fun!

Beautiful box, Doug. I checked out your blog and really liked your thoughts on "Bankruptcy of Spirit".

Doug, just checked out your blog on the box making. Found it very interesting. Your new pivot fence for the new router table is a step up from the one used in your video. You won't know yourself.

    Bob,
When I got the Gifkins jig, I realized that the router table I had was too small, so I needed a larger one. The magazine said they were interested in my new router table, but with a new fence as well. One thing leads to another. But the old router table is still good, so now I will use both.

    Hi Doug,

I love the Owl,(and the box)

He looks pretty relaxed sitting up there and does compliment the rustic look of the box.

Maybe even some kind of "Owl" inlay or Pyro on it.
