    Default Gifkins jig

    Hi:

Does anyone have or use the H10 Small Scale Template for the Gifkins. It appears to produce very small dovetails which would appear to be quite attractive on a box.

Any experience with this that you would care to share is appreciated.

I've used the H10 quite a lot and, as a box maker, it is now my most commonly used template. The dovetails LOOK very delicate but are immensely strong, I guess because there's more of them. I had some badly cupped curly jarrah that I wanted to use and the H10 was better at pulling it into line than the larger dovetails. One other plus is that it gives you a greater range of sizes that give a symmetrical arrangement of dovetails. In short, highly recommended.

    Fletty:

Do you have photos of your work with the smaller template? I can't figure out how to access photos of member's work yet. Then again, maybe I can't.

    Thanks for your helpful comments

sb, I'll photograph some this afternoon and post tonight. You don't have to access the pics, they show on the reply, Fletty

sb, I have learnt 2 things today, 58 year old men probably shouldnt continue running in the 14km City to Surf run that I did this morning AND probably should start using a camera tripod as steadiness and age appear to be inversely proportional!
Pic attached is a Silky Oak and Australian red cedar box I made a few years ago. I was pleased to see that one of my steel rules had inches on the 'other' side.
I am sure that there are many better pics on the Gifkin web page but here is an amateurs effort ...

Don't forget that the maximum thickness of timber for the H series templates is 10mm.

The A series goes up to 13mm and is quite OK for small boxes. I think it's the best one to get. If you want to get an H series afterwards, then you can. But you will proboably find that you're happy with the A.

Just my 1.78c worth (which was 2c this morning but the dollar dropped unfortunately)
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

Thanks for the photo. I am curious how the lid is attached.

The joints certainly are subtle. Impressive.

    Thanks again.
