    Default Gifkin's loose lidded box- jig?

    I'm in the process of making a box based on Gifkin's loose lidded box design. I was wondering if any one has come up with a smart way / jig/ method/ guide to hold the lid carcase when routing the rebate in the lid with the slot cutter.

    His book mentions taping the carcase together, but even so, I'm not keen on putting my fingers that close to the bit.


    (I did actually do one about a month ago from a kit, but I can't remember how I held it, and this box is a tiny bit smaller )

    There is a segment on the forum video that covers this. It was done by Gumby.. worth a look. you can download the video from the forum.
    Gifkins also has a very detailed dvd on his jig and boxmaking. but is not free. You can order it from.Here I think its $22
    Reality is no background music.

    I have only been using the Gifkin jig and slot cutter for last few months. My woodworking skills are limited but I find using the slot cutter quick, easy and safe. dry assemble the box and use strong tape. any other "jig" in this step would complicate what is a very simple step..

    I used a piece of 12mm MDF a little bigger than the lid, attached small handles and the put in 8, 6mm dowels as corner guides. Place over the lid and you can now push it around the cutter with the comfort that your fingers are well away.

    Thanks for the info, cooper.

    I think i figured out why this second box I made was making me so nervous about rebating the lid.

    Check out the poor positioning of the dovetails on the second box - on the right in the picture.
