Gifkins Special Jewellery Box my version
Well, after much heart ache here is my attempt at the jewellery box of Roger Gifkins.
Learn't alot about the lack of skills on my part. Found out that huon pine is very brittle, barrel concealed hinges will break if the holes are even slightly of centre and that Rustins Danish oil can hide alot of mistakes. Made the frame three times with 2 flops so gave up on the huon pine insets and just used blackwood. The whole thing is solid blackwood with a commercial inlay from Creative Finishes. First attempt at inlay. Despite a number of mistakes, my niece just loved it for her 18th birthday present.
While there has been much blue language from the shed it has emboldened me to keep making boxes.

Thanks guys
One of the things I learnt doing this box is the issue of warped timber. I do not have a bandsaw or thicknesser planer. They are on my list to buy over time but I want to buy a quality unit and of course that costs money.
The timber was machined by a local supplier but once machined you have to accept the timber unseen. This was a major issue when I found the timber could rock a baby to sleep it was so warped. To be fair it may be that once the timber is 10mm or less it is more proned to warping. I have tried internet sales but have had trouble getting matching timber.
Any suggestions on suppliers of reliable quality box timbers?

You did terrifically well with those dovetails given that you had warped timber. Very nice hinges, Maybe barrel hinges in 10mm stock would have been a bit light on for a box that size?

Hi
Thanks. The stock was 12mm for the caracase and tried using the drill press through from the edge method as recommended in the plans. Don't have a good drill press fence and paid the price.. Absolute nightmare. I will try the Box Bits #4 method next time as I went through 2 sets of barrel hinges and split the side of the box as I epoxied the barrels in to ensure they did not move. Fortunately the brass hinges hide all that heartache.Last edited by pwjupp; 17th July 2011 at 09:37 PM. Reason: Clarification

Paul, I use an 8mm Forstner style bit when drilling for 8mm barrel hinges finding it more accurate than other twist bits with a neater fit for the barrels.....cheers Kerry

warped & unsquare timber is a pain.
The finished item looks good from here.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.
