    Default Gift for my daughter

When I started getting into woodwork last year I asked the mrs & the kids what they would like me to make for them.

My 7yr old gave a quite a challenge, especially for a beginner like myself!

It was to be a display box for the gemstones and rocks she collects. Her drawing has a hinged section at the top for larger geodes and two normal drawers which are divided into 16 sections for the smaller stones. She also requested a third secret drawer for very favorite ones.

After a fair bit of time on shop furniture I felt ready to give it a crack. Added to the challenge is that this will all be done with hand tools so I don't annoy the neighbours when working after the day job.

It's still WIP but is starting to take form.

Photo 1 is the meranti caracas starting to take shape. The plywood drawer dividers are in place but these still need to trimmed back so they can be edged with hardwood.

Photo 2 is the top section complete after glue up. The exterior still needs finishing but the interior was sanded to 1200 grit then two coats of homebrew danish oil.

Hopefully I'll get some more time over the holidays to start the drawers.

I'm still unsure about the secret drawer. In thinking a hidden catch of some sort, maybe using neomidium magnets to lock it in place until the catch is released. Any suggestions?

Place the hidden drawer in the plinth.

Thanks. I was thinking of the plinth.

The issue is the hidden locking mechanism she requested. I've seen a few on YouTube but the seem a little over complicated.

Perhaps something that uses a separate magnet to activate the catch?

eg. You need to place a good magnet in a certain spot in the bottom-most drawer, so that when you close the drawer the magnet will raise a pawl or pin?
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

A random conversation with a neighbour came up with a good idea.

Part of the plinth is removable, held in place with two dowels (maybe metal?). The towel extends through the carcass and into the secret drawer, locking it closed.

A magnet on the removable plinth will keep it in place of the holes enlarge over time and with use.

Would anyone suggest any changes to the this?
