    Default Gift Wrapped Box

    I have recently gone down the path of this box making caper. I have five grandaughters and this is the third box so there is lots to learn. Basically I have followed the techniques that Doug Stowe has outlined in his books and also a few ideas have come from various woodworking magazines.
    We had a holiday in Tasmania in March and I bought some huon pine, sassafras, myrtle and king billy that was sent back here to Sydney. This box was made from some tasmanian myrtle and huon pine. Just a pleasure to work with........
    I wanted to get the visual effect of the box being tied with ribbon and at first i tried to get the curl features by laminating and bending veneer. I soon found that I have a lot learn regarding wood bending as I could not get four pieces that were the same final dimensions. I intend to go back into the shed and try and master the wood bending lark.
    I ended up cutting the myrtle across the grain and then turning the curls as small tubes. That way the grain runs in the correct direction. I used a rosewood stain on the ribbon pieces to get the necessary contrast. Next time I would use a third species of wood.....

    I love the bow being 4 pieces, it is a feast for the eyes! I wonder how a huon or king billy pine box with a highly figured or spalted ribbon would look......

    Excellent work Ruddy. Doug Stowe influence shows clearly in the design of this box and you have completed it perfectly. The combination of timbers you have used compliment each other extremely well and I love your idea of the bow effect. A really nice, unique box. Well done.
