    Default Glasses Case Mark 2

My second attempt at a glasses case. The first came out OK, (here: https://www.woodworkforums.com/f87/glasses-case-148467/ ) and was good practice, but was only balsa and I made a lot of little mistakes along the way. Hopefully I can put what I learned to good use and make a better one this time.

This one will have a N.G. Rosewood body, with a Zebrawood lid and base. Felt lining, but haven't decided what colour yet. I'm planning 2 magnets to hold the lid shut - one at each side, with a bevel in the centre of the front edge of the lid as a 'handle'.
I've got some brass (plated) hinges, but I'm also considering making wooden ones.

I've got the basics done - the body blank is cut and the lid is carved roughly into shape.
Next up is the laborious process of hollowing out the middle of the body. (Bought a Dremel and a heap of accessories yesterday, so it won't be too hard. Shaped the first one by hand with carving knives and 40 grit paper.)

There are some pics of progress so far, the base, body and lid respectively, below.

Got the body hollowed out today. My methods are primitive, so it was a slow process but came up well. Just a little more smoothing and I can do the lid cut-away.

The little Dremel planer earned it's keep shaping this. Saved heaps of time.
    A few pics below.

Getting there. All the rough shaping is done and the pieces fit together fairly well.
It's mainly all lid shaping from here on. I'll make it much thinner at the sides, curved to flow into the body like it does at the front. I might make the base thinner, too, though I don't want to make it too thin or that lovely zebrawood grain won't be so visible.

I decided to add an inlay, too, for practice. This time, rather than buy an off-the-shelf inlay, I had a go at making my own, from Jarrah, (the border), Rosewood, (background and glasses lenses) and Camphor Laurel, (glasses frame). Didn't come up too bad.
In the last pic it's sitting roughly in place.

Thanks. I could, but I need more zebrawood, I'm almost out. Got heaps of rosewood.

Got another piece in the works, too, keeping me busy - a carved elliptical rosewood jewellery/keepsake box. Just finished rough-shaping the body.

Steve, lovely inlay. Good Job. Will you post pics of the elliptical box your making? Sounding fine.

    Thanks for the compliment.

Yep, I'll start a thread on the elliptical box once I get a little more done.
This is the body so far - 20 cm x 16 cm x 8 cm tall, roughly belt-sanded into shape. Another lovely piece of wood. Should come up nice if I don't stuff it up.

Got all the lid shaping finished. Came up pretty good. Just lots of sanding now, to get rid of the last tool marks. I love the way the zebrawood grain has come out.
Gotta thin the base, too. Looks a bit out of proportion.

Then it's hinges, magnets and inlay.

I got most of it finished and assembled over the last couple of days. Only the lining to go.
I re-made the inlay, using different timbers - QLD Silver Ash for the glasses, NG Rosewood for the background and Blackwood for the border. Came up OK. (My next partly-finished inlay is in the background of the last pic, a daffodil made from Zebrawood, Rosewood, Jarrah, Camphor Laurel, Purple Heart and QLD Silver Ash.)

Thanks, guys, for the kind words.
Sort of a shame I've got to line it and cover up that nice Zebrawood.
I've enjoyed making these glasses cases, a good easy introduction to learn the basics and to give me an idea of what tools I need.
Still pretty short on tools, but the Dremel and it's plunge router, router/shaper table and planer attachments have helped heaps. Little by little I'll add more equipment as the budget allows. Can't wait to get a bandsaw, planer and thicknesser.

The next project, the elliptical Rosewood box, will be more of a test. So far it's going well. I'll start a thread soon when I have a little more to show.

    Thank you.

I was talking to a lady friend earlier and she suggested small jewellery boxes in a similar style to the glasses cases, (but a bit bigger). She particularly liked the shaped lid.
(I guess she was hinting, but I'll probably give it a go when I get a chance.)

For now, I've got the elliptical Rosewood box well under way. Just finished the inlays in the lid blank. Starting a thread.
