Default Which glue for this job?

    G'Day All,

I am in the process of making a pen box for my son. This will be a birthday gift and I need to inlay a coin into the lid. Luckily, the coin and one of my forstner bits are exactly the same, so fitting it is not an issue BUT I need to know what glue to use to bond the timber and the coin,

Any suggestions/ help greatly appreciated as I am a complete novice at this game.

    Rob.

    Hi Rob,
Any Epoxy will do it. Araldite is probably the easiest to source in small quantity.

For a coin, epoxy should be right.

If you ever inlay any larger non-timber pieces into wood then I recommend using a bead of silicone instead, as it allows for differences in expansion rates.

(Says the bloke who had several cheeseboards returned for 'cracked porcelain inlays' before discovering this trick. )
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

If you can see your way clear to do it, paint the inside rim of the hole with black artist's acrylic. I do this to hide the usual gaps between wood and abalone shell inlay that I use for some eyes in wood carvings. Makes the gaps disappear.
Adhesive? Araldite would be OK. Small blob of bathtub silicone caulk is what I like.
