    Default Hand Tool Toolbox

    Hi All,

    Not sure if this is the place but it has box in the name so here I am. I’m waiting to pick up some timber once lockdown lifts for my workbench, so have started working on the tool box. It’s the design taken out of the Anarchists Tool-chest for reference.




    Still early days, will spend a week or so joining boards in preparation of lots of dovetailing. I purchased some 200m Radiata Pine and will join three boards before I start the carcass.




    Any pointers or advice would be appreciated.

    So I have a panel three boards wide, I plan on flattening one of the sides then squaring up an edge from that flattened side. To carcass it up, is it necessary to flatten the outer face also? I am thinking as long as the inside face is flat and edges are square I should be ok. Then I can plane the outside so it finishes well but absolute flatness doesnt seem essential.

    Any advice would be fantastic.

    Hi HS. Always best to dress both faces. What if you leave finishing the out side until the end, only to get tearout that you cant hide? Finding this out before you start just makes the decision of which face goes inside easier

    Watching with interest as I am (slowly!) making the same toolchest out of hoop pine. I haven’t yet glued up any panels as I am still working out the maximum yield from my pile of planks; they are a bit knottier than I’d like.

    Ill keep the photos up mate, I checked the invoice its Hoop Pine also. My bad!

    I took the advice of the timber shop, just that panel is a hefty lad, I can only imagine what it would be like in hard wood.

    So I checked the panel, it is cupped quite significantly. I would say the cup is about 2-3 mm deep, so there is going to be quite a bit of work to get it flat. Is it normal to lose that much material or have I butchered the jointing of it?
