    Default Harmonica box (second attempt)

Well after making my first ever box, I attempted to create a prettier one. The difference is I miss calculated (a lot) and have not been able to create the rebates for the lid to the box. The material thickness is just under 6mm so I don't see hinges working either. What can I do to keep the lid on the box? I thought of magnets, but will that work?

    Hi Cal,
I like the box the feature panel is beautiful, but you do have a dilemma with only 6mm thickness to the sides you are correct hinges will be difficult, even 5mm bullet hinges would be a big ask in only 6mm material possibly magnets as you ask may be a chance if you can get some small enough hopefully someone will have an answer for you.

    Hi Cal,

how about surfacehinges on the back, held in place by screws shortened to suit the thinness of the sides and also some epoxy?

    love the box.

I found some 5mm magnets online, will give them a go. Can only stuff it up more, this one was a real challenge. At every turn I messed it up. It started with a claret ash base and some really nice pine from flinders ranges. Wrecked both of those timbers. The width of the sides (wattle) started out at 8mm, stuffed that up on the sander hence the 6mm now.

    Hi again Cal,
The only problem I see with magnets is how you will locate the lid in position when closing. I have some hinges from Timbecon that mat be small enough for you're purpose they are listed as Jewellery box butt hinges the sizes are 15 x 9mm and 20 x 12mm the 12mm being the total width including the knuckle so they would fit into the 6mm side with the knuckle exposed and the 9mm even smaller.

Thanks Rod, that sounds promising. Will order some of them. Could use the magnets for the closer on the other side. Cheers Cal

Lovely looking box, despite all the troubles.
How about making some leather strap hinges and lid-opener, and using small, say 3mm magnets to keep the lid closed. I get mine from Maglab.

    Beautiful box!!

External hinges as suggested by others, Or perhaps large wooden hinges as a feature. These can be glued to the box, no screws to mess with.

Thanks Alex, interesting idea. I had thought of a couple of leather straps and a leather handle too. Not sure how it would affect the look of the box over all???

Thanks Artme! Will look into wooden hinges too. I could see myself messing them up too!

Oh and by the way, does anyone know what the timber on the top may be??? It was in a pack of veneer I purchased years ago (that's the whole sheet on the box) I have no idea what it is.

Could you have a cleat on the underside of the lid that would locate it correctly for the magnets to do their thing?

    The top is really nice!

Not quite quarter cut northern silky oak, (cardwellius sublimus). This type of "quarter cut" is very common with veneer.

I thought of a thin cleat at either end of the lid today. Would have to be thin and shallow to fit with the harmonicas in place, will experiment with it on the weekend. Good idea Wynterplace!

Thanks Jim, a friend of mine asked if it was Silky Oak. I said I didn't know what it was as I have only ever used southern silky. That's a great help thank you.

I just did it recently with my first box attempt, mainly because I had no hardware except a couple of magnets.

Yours looks really well made so a very thin cleat should work fine... or even a rebate around the underside of the lid.
