Now, back to business. (After all, the tools really only interest me. Everyone else already has them.)

I got side-tracked re-arranging the shed today, to make space, but just got things set up to start routing the middle.
Since I'm doing it freehand, I cut around the lines with a hobby knife so I'll get 'peel-out' when I get right to the lines. Much more accurate than splitting a pencil line, I've found.

Took ages to find just the right pieces of timber for a level playing surface. The front bits stay clamped, but I can release and re-clamp the rear one to rotate the workpiece 120 degrees to see what I'm doing. The workpiece is held firmly by pressure from the rear.

Ignore the drill hole - that's from testing the drill press for square. Drilled through, then turned the workpiece 90 degrees and checked alignment. Near perfect, thankfully. The bit went in and out again without scraping on the sides.

SWMBO was looking over my shoulder and she loves the roadster. She said, 'ooh, make me one'. Maybe in a few years when I actually learn some woodworking skills.

Looks great though. Good luck with that one.

Should be fun. And a long, drawn-out process, I imagine. A fantastic looking model, (when experienced hands make it). I'm bound to mess things up along the way, with all of my 3 months woodworking experience, but plan to just keep repeating a part until I get it right, if necessary.
The plans will probably arrive this week and I can sort out timber selection etc and get started.

Back on the box tomorrow, after I get a little more done setting up the workshop. The top of the body is almost fully routed, then I can drill out the guts.

I got the routing part finished today. Needs a bit of a clean up when sanding, but came up OK. Even a brand new router bit didn't stop the end-grain tearing.

The lid will only recess 5mm into the body, but I took 7mm off the divider, to allow for sanding the top edge of the box, layers of finish etc.

Drilling next, to remove the bulk of the rest of the material.

Made a bit of progress today. Got the main waste removed. And without tearout problems in the Jarrah, luckily. I did cut along the line at the bottom with a hobby knife, as a stop line for tearout, but hardly needed it.

I found that the little Dremel Multi-Max is almost custom-made for joining the drill holes. Took less than 2 minutes. In fact, if it was all QLD Maple without the Jarrah, I could have plunge-cut the middle bits out without drilling.

Coming along nicely. How good are the Dremel products. I'm surprised at just how often I'm using mine.

You're right. I hadn't tried using it for this before. I got a shock when it sliced straight through like a knife through hot butter. I need a curved gouge type accessory for the Multi-Max now and I could scoop out most of the rest really fast. I'll check and see if there is such a thing, otherwise I might have to make something.
And to think I used a chisel a couple of weeks ago on a pen/pencil cup and it took an hour or two to do the same. (I had the Multi-Max then, but didn't think to use it for this. I'll know next time.)

I got most of the sanding done today, thanks to the new spindle sander, but got side-tracked by the thing underneath in the pic. Fun, fun, fun. (Please, no-one ask.)

I have to change to the smallest spindle in the morning to get into the tight bits. It's 1/2" and should just fit nicely. Then another quick buzz around the rest to remove the last 2mm. I can get stuck into the lid, soon.

I still need to find an easy way to get a dead flat surface in an enclosed area like that. For now, I'll have to resort to metal files and sandpaper paddles for the centre divider. The curves are relatively easy, with the spindle sander. I just need some finer grit sleeves for finishing. I'll get them next week. Got a dust extractor coming tomorrow or Monday, so the budget is flat again for now.

I edited the pic to avoid copyright infringement.

Have you or are you going to make that Roadster? Looks like it could be a nice project. What are you planning on making next anyway?

Yep, the Roadster is next. It's for a mate, (unofficially adopted father), who was born in 1928 - his birth-year car. I'm working it in with the heart box - making the chassis rails today. I gave his wife the elliptical box I made a couple weeks ago for her birthday, so have to balance things now.
There's a better pic of how it will (hopefully) look in this post, on the second page of this thread: -

Also a '56 Pickup that I'll make for myself. I want one of the '30 Roadsters. too, so I'll be making another in the future. I can get some practice making Jack's one. (He doesn't know I'm making it.)
I hunted down heaps of pics of real A Models last night, to get some more of the finer detail.

I still can't get satisfaction from H&F regarding the bowed bandsaw table, so I can't cut out the Roadster parts yet.
They never call me back. https://www.woodworkforums.com/f27/ta...things-152827/

I've been following your bandsaw thread with interest. I don't need a bandsaw as yet but there will come a time soon and H&F would have been my choice. From H&F I have bought a drill press and a sander this past weekend and have been happy with them. I've read that their service is great but it doesn't seem like it in your case. Might be different if you were face to face but it shouldn't have to be like that. Hope they sort it out for you.

Yeah, mate. I'd rather they sort it out equitably than force me to take it further. I've been trying to give them every chance, but my patience is rapidly thinning.

Since last week when the bandsaw and spindle sander arrived from H&F, I've bought a bandsaw blade, oscillating sander spindle and belt cleaner from them and they arrived almost immediately. I also have a dust extractor and accessories ordered, as mentioned. It's not like I'm a one-off customer. The dust extractor may well be the last thing I ever buy from them, though. We'll see what happens.

I got the inside rough sanding finished this morning. I didn't get as much done as I would have liked, since I'm also working on the Roadster model and setting up the workshop.
Next a bit of final shaping for the divider, then onto rounding things off a little more and smoothing.

The spindle sander has been a God-send for this box. Gets into the corners really well with the 12mm sleeve: -

I'm finally getting some time to work on this box again, so it's been reincarnated.

Over the last couple of nights I've been working on the centre divider, hand-sanding it flat. It's almost there, so tonight I marked out the bottom for cutting out. I'll do that tomorrow, then there's only a couple of hours more work on the spindle sander sanding the inside and I can glue the bottom on.
I just got the bandsaw working properly today, finally, so for the first time I won't have to cut it out the hard way.

I ordered some much finer 240 grit sleeves for the spindle sander today, too, to speed the process. Less hand sanding.

    She's getting there.
