    Default Steel First

For brass screws apart from using wax/soup it is far better (or more safe from a snapping point of view) to first put in a good quality steel screw of the same gauge and thread type, but before doing this drill a pilot hole just smaller than the gauge thickness of the screw then line the slots up with the stronger steel screws, now when you come to put in the brass screw it has a path to follow thus no resistance or heat build up in the brass screw.

I read somewhere the way to do this was to insert the screws, mark the clocks, take them out, file down the head and make a new slot in desired position. I have a vague feeling it was in a thread talking about how the railways coach builders worked.
