Following in the steps of ajw, Bilby and AlexS this is my contribution to the hexagonal boxes being shown lately. This box nearly didn't get a showing due to me falling off my steep learning curve. The veneers that form the top pattern were close to - but not perfect. I thought I'd kill two birds with one stone and used some epoxy to fill the gaps and as a finish. You know, the runny type of epoxy you'd use to fill burl. There were some bubbles in the epoxy so in Stu's Shed style (see his recent burl clock episode) I decided to use heat to eliminate the bubbles. Stuart used a blow torch to rid his finish of bubbles but lacking this tool, I used the oven griller (it was safe to do so, my wife was at work). I cranked the knob up to 200C , put the timer on for 5 minutes and placed the box on the oven shelf. The box was nearly ruined. The lid was now covered in hundreds of rock hard epoxy bubbles and blisters. I will no do this again.

After a couple of days I removed the epoxy with chisels and sand paper and finished the box with shellac and wax after removing the lid and fitting the liner.

BTW, Bilby, great idea to cut the liner with the sides.
