    Default Hinge Screws

    Hi All,

I have decided to take the plunge and make a jewellery box, or two. Having never done one before, it is very interesting to say the least.

Managed to score some Andrew Crawford hinges, but his screws are incredibly soft and break off in the RedGum that I am using. The question is, what thread size are his screws (assume imperial), and more importantly, where can I get some for pilot holes?

    Thanks all.

    George

His website says they're 5/8" No. 3, I'm assuming that means #3 gauge, which would be about right. You want steel ones for pilot holes? I don't think you'll get them at Bunnings, but any decent fastener specialist should have some. If you can only get metric ones 2.5mm x 16mm should do the same job.

Dengue found some steel screws a while back and kindly sent me some. If he spots this ore you send him a message he'll probably let you know where he scored them.
When you're putting the screws in the first time put a bit of candle wax on them, especially in a hard wood like red gum.

And yes, the size is 5/8" #3.

+1 for candle wax. You can also run them through your hair (if you have any ) for the same result. The hair method doesn't work very well for me anymore.

This might help if you need more brass screws. They don't appear to sell steel screws to make the starter threads.

I remember when the old carpenters that used Brylcream used to run a nail or screw through their hair
I used to carry carry a cake of soap or a candle in my nail bag or wipe the nail under my armpit

i purchased a no3 Vix Bit , self centering drill with 5/64 replaceable drill bit claimed to suit no 2 and 3 wood screws, got it online from lee valley offshore, it solves the problem of locating your drill hole dead centre in the countersink, and if the hole is slightly oversize i place a couple of slivers of timber in prior to placing the screw, also dip the screws in jar of u beaut wax ,no rubbing of soap or candles although they were used prior for years.

I bought 3G 3/8” slotted steel screws from Screwsline - Specialists in new & vintage brass, chrome, steel and stainless slotted wood screws, nuts, bolts, washers, ironmongery & more but you can also find them online sometimes - especially eBay UK. +1 for the wax but I rub the screws against a candle - bit less messy than dipping.

    Best regards,

    Brian
