Did someone say Holly?
This is one of my favorite wood combinations. And Holly is a wonderful wood. It can be polished so smooth that it looks like ivory. Not one of my best but good enough for the family gift exchange.
This box is made from Holly with a Bloodwood top. The dimensions 5"x 3"x 2" tall. It is finished inside and out with a few coats of drying oil, the outside wet sanded with each coat of oil down to 800 grit. The result is a piece that is absolutely smooth and lovely to the touch. The whole box was then buffed with a coat of Canuba wax. Hinges are a standard type and the box opens to 180*.

Gorgeous - Yep, love that Holly! it sure is white!!
Very neat - just out of curiosity, did you find you spent more time on such a little box compared to a bigger box?
cheers

I have found it that there is not much difference in time for a box like this. I have also found that when doing some other styles that the smaller ones are a bit more time consuming because of thier size. Also, I have found that the type of finishing can make a time difference. French polishing is much more time consuming on smaller boxes. I hope this answers your question.

Very nice, mate. Someone will be happy with it.
It's good to see that you went to the effort of mitring the top of the lid; it's not easy, is it?

It's beautiful. I really like the marriage of the two timbers.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

And you Aussies know where to get your Holly.... for the right price if you are prepared to mill it yourself. From little ol' me. As I've said before on this Forum it's a weed here.

Holly sizes
The trees that are around here are typically150-170mm diameter. They have some branches (knots).
If Forum members would like a log for boxmaking I am happy to supply free. (You pay postage if you are a long way away).
Please PM me if interested as i don't want to hijack this thread and take away from Gecko's wonderful work.
