Default Huon pine / blackbean box finally completed

Hi, all this summer I have been building a box for my sister's knitting needles, with internal capacity and dimensions to her specification. Ended up 500 x 200 x 120. When asked about the number of needles she has, I got " We won't go there". But some of them were over 350mm long, I was told. Looking forward to getting a picture of it full of knitting needles

Had a bit of trouble initially after glue up and cutting off the lid, when the long box sides bowed outwards. but the lid did not. I received some great advice and suggestions from forum members which were very much appreciated. I eventually ended up sanding the outsides flat, so that you can hardly see the box/ lid join line.

    Box details:

Sides: single black bean board with continuous grain around box.
Lid: Huon pine board cut into 1mm veneers and glued to both sides of 4mm marine plywood substrate
Lid inlay: Queen Ebony from Solomon Islands
Corner Keys: 2mmQueensland silver ash timber
Base: Veneered radiata pine timber on 4mm marine plywood substrate
Lining: Red pigskin spray glued on 2mm cardboard
Finish: Livos Kunos #244 natural eco oil from Germany

    Tray details:

Sides: Huon pine, with huon pine divider
Corner Keys: 2mm Queen Ebony from Solomon Islands
Base: Veneered radiata pine timber on 4mm marine plywood substrate
Lining: Red pigskin spray glued on 2mm cardboard
Finish: Livos Kunos #244 natural eco oil from Germany

    Hardware:
Polished brass SmartHinges by Andrew Crawford, UK
100mm polished brass Lifting Handles from Goods and Chattels, Ferny Grove, Qld

    Hi,
Fantastic. I hope you get a nice pullover for your efforts. Not that you should need one in Townsville.
    Regards

    Nice box Dengue
Was over in Townsville last year for my Partners grandson's 21st
Was stunned by the natural beauty of the area, kicks the ass of Perth anyday.(am a keen photographer so appreciate these things)
Wasn't too keen on the humidity though.

Great work Dengue, Unfortunately for me and because I was so impressed by the finished product I made the mistake of showing SWMBO... as it transpires she is now so dissatisfied with the plastic box I gave her she wants better...

Nice work Dengue. The lid especially really grabs me, but the whole thing looks pretty good.

Beautiful piece of work, Dengue. The blackbean and huon pine go so well together and all the little details are very nicely done.

I can only imagine your sis was completely blown away! Well done

Thanks for this nice comment Peter. The box is "In Transit" to Sydney, via Aust Post. Weighed 4.2kg, but they charged me a volumetric weight of 11kg, and it was not really a big parcel - ended up costing $50, plus cost of registering and insurance. Mongrels! Wonder if it will get there before Easter. This is the same mob that is making their letter service deliberately slower, and charging us more for the degraded service. And the CEO still has a job...grrrrrr

Hope my sister likes it. I am worried the box is a bit too formal for knitting needles, but told her she can sand it back and paint it all white if she doesn't like it. OMDB, as they say
    regards,

    Dengy

Just like the supermarkets Dengy, when they change the packaging, reduce the size and maintain the same price, sneaky ba$%(*&ds.
Oh BTW superb box, well done.
    Cheers, Ian

    Wow...that looks sensational.

Looks to be beautifully made and a nice smooth finish to boot. Love the lid too.

If your sis finds it a bit formal, she can put her needles in a shoe box and just sit and admire this one!!!

    Nice work.

    Steven.
