Huon Pine Burial Urn
This is a burial urn for the ashes of my MIL. The application directed the choice of the timber, both for its longevity and preciousness. It also directed the proportions, dimensions and robustness of the hand cut dovetails. I have had a nice lump of Huon with this white bait figure lying around for some time awaiting a suitable project. I wanted to use a simple half lap joint between lid and box since there was no need for it to open. Once ready to seal, a bead of adhesive will be run around the joint and it will be irreversibly hammered home to close up the gap visible in the second photo.
In the first photo just prior to glue up you can see the internal trench that will become one half of the lid joint. These were the first hand cut dovetails I've done in a while and not up to my usual level of perfection so I'm glad it is going underground. It is really a perishable skill! Though I think I can blame some of it on my frozen shoulder. Thanks for looking.

Really nice work and a fitting tribute. I'd be more than happy with that level of perfection - still striving to just get them to fit together!!!
First time I've seen that 'white bait' figure - gorgeous

Mic, in the 3rd photo, did you make the carcass and then add an internal sleeve, or is it all one piece of timber?
Rgds,
