Default I'm sure it's pine but what type?

    Hi all,

I have a lid from an old home made wooden toolbox. I think it is Hoop Pine but I'm not sure.

The toolbox was made in Australia about late 1950's, the carcass was made from hardwood, some form of gum these days you just say it's Tassie Oak.

The lid is 1 board 400 X 300mm approx. with very unusual markings.

    Any idea's?

I will make a small box from the board, bit too thin to resaw in half may do some home veneering.

    Cheers.

My guess is Kauri, which was a very popular and inexpensive timber at that time. There are many types of Kauri ine.

The markings look like “birdseye”; very highly sought after. Without being able to closely inspect the grain I could imagine it being Huon pine. Have a very close look at the endgrain; is it really fine? And does the wood feel more like a hardwood than a softwood?

It's not Huon no nice smell, grain isn't tight. The piece of wood was well covered in dirt & grease but it definitely has a greenish hue to it, no noticeable odor to it when I put it through the planer.

    Cool I cut it up

I'm still not 100% but I might go with Kauri Pine, I do have some Kauri Pine it has a distinctive greenish tinge to the wood but I purchased some Kauri from Carbatec in Brisbane it has a similar grain & smell but it is very light cream in colour.

Here's the start of a small box. I will do a contrast with some Red Cedar around the top of the lid & the butterfly keys. Straight cut miters, blue tape & rubber bands for the glue up. check all square.

Default A small box in the works

    Hi all,

Some more pic's of the box in the making. I think the Red Cedar will be a nice contrast.

I used some wipe on poly to seal the wood & give me an idea about orientation front & back.

I am not going to do a separate tray lust an open type box probably use some felt for the inner base.

Pine cedar liner glue up 1.jpgPine cedar lining glue up 2.jpg I usually glue up the liner in the box using some gladwrap, blue tape & a rubber band. This way I can remove it to finesse & apply some finish. I haven't decided on hinges & clasp yet.

    Cheers.

    Default The finished article, box

Had some plated hardware hanging about here's the result,

pine finished box front.jpgpine finished box side.jpgpine finished box back.jpg

pine finished box open lid front.jpgpine finished box open lid side.jpg I had a small swatch of red suede for the base & Red Cedar for the inner lining.

No wax or polish yet but basically that's the outcome from the old toolbox lid. very little waste.

    Cheers.
