Default an image of one of my boxes: bird's eye Huon Pine with figured Blackwood lid

    Hi guys,

here is a box I made a while ago. Bird's eye Huon Pine frame with figured Blackwood lid, Blackwood corner splines, and inside there is red leather over 6 mm foam fitted to the floor. 250 mm square, by 90 mm deep

    cheers, George Harris Hobart

Beautiful work. Any chance of some pics of the inside and hinges?

    Regards,

    Hi Rob,

I will find some images of inside, and hinge details when I get home this evening. I have images of other boxes as well, all in figured Tasmanian timbers,

    cheers, George

Two of my favourite timbers. Nice box.

Lovely result. The birds eye Huon looks great George.
I look forward to seeing inside the box and how you have done the hinge.
    Thanks for posting your work.

    Hi guys, more images attached...

these cover my preferred hinges, method of fitting leather and foam, and covering brads in underside of floor, as well as my shop-made jig for slide-cutting corner splines. I hope you find this useful

Nice work George. I use the same method for installing the leather. I use a higher density craft foam, either 2 or 4 mm.
What sort of leather is it, calf? Do you stick the leather to the foam?

I don't know what sort of leather it is, but I buy it from a local leather shop, and I buy for colour, suppleness, fine texture, etc.
I glue the foam to the floor with spray adhesive, and then also the leather to the foam. That makes it easy to trim, and nothing moves as you fit it together.
I assemble and sand the box with the lid attached, and cut it off later on the band saw, but I guess you guys do the same. Cheers, George
