    Default Some Inlay/Banding Strips

I haven't done much of inlaying/banding strips and what I have done I've made myself. But, whilst at the Maleny Wood Expo last month and talking to the owner of where a lot of you guys (and myself) buy your strap hinges from, Michael. He had a box of these selling them in packs for $18 a pack or 3 packs for $50. Michael told me he usually sold each pack for $140. So I bought 3 packs. This was on the Saturday, on the Monday they were all gone.

So after I got home I decided to make 3 identical boxes so I could experiment with the 3 different patterns. The boxes are made from Australian Red Cedar and White Cedar. 250mm x 150mm.

Here are a few pics to show you how the banding turned out. Brian, a close up pic of my "scalloped" piece for the ring holders.

Lovely boxes Paul. I like the wide banding.

Where do you buy the strap hinges and clasps from?

    Cheers

Sounds like you got a real bargain with that banding haul and already started to put it to good use.

    Red face RuRu

Thanks so much for posting the photos of the boxes you made and including the description of the woods you used.

As a beginner woodworker, I read most of the posts in the Box Making forum. I get the most benefit when the poster has taken the time to describe how and what the box is made of.

Would you please advise where you purchased the hardware from, because I would like to purchase from that same person, if he/she sells to the public. I feel that the cost is likely to be less than purchasing from the UK!

Also, would you mind advising what grits you went through and what you used to finish the wood?

I really appreciate you reading this email and hopefully answering it, if you have time.

    Cheers
    Ruru

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for the close-up of the scalloped piece! Looks like your catches and hinges came from the same source as the banding?

I wish there was someone who supplied box catches and hinges at a quality and price point somewhere between the high end - Ian Hawthorne/Andrew Crawford/Brusso and the low end stuff available locally. Anton Gerner has some hinges, but not rail hinges or stop hinges. Will have to keep looking!

    Thanks again,

    Brian

Hi there Gents, firstly the strap hinges and the clasp and the banding were bought from

    https://www.veneerinlay.com.au/

I'd never used those clasps before but seeing as I met Michael on that day I bought 5 from him ($10 each). Plus the inlay/banding. The strap hinges I already had about a 15 or so at home so didn't buy any more at that time.

I use those hinges on all boxes about that size 250mm x 150mm and have the sides 10mm. 12mm sides I would reserve for larger boxes and most likely would use the Smart Hinge from the UK.

For that particular inlay banding I routered into what was to become lid frame timber down 1mm. (before doing the mitre joints). The inlay is only 1/2mm thick. I glued the banding into that router slot. Allowing for a bit of excess banding to be wasted when cutting the mitres. (make sure you chalk mark the insides of your frame). I do my mitre cuts on my table saw and if they are pretty accurate you should end up with neat mitres and banding. After gluing/clamping of your mitre frame and lid insert, I put it through my home made drum sander and I have 1/2mm to play with before I hit the actual banding. Giving me nice clean joints.

By now your nearly ready to glue and clamp the lid onto the main box carcass. After this I sand with Random Orbital sander 240, 320, 400, 800, 1500 and 2000 grit. Still got a bit to do yet, slice off lid etc, but your well on your way.

For finishing I have been experimenting with a few different mixes but basically its oil and wax.

I'm with you Brian, the search for decent priced quality hinges, locks and other hardware continues [emoji16].

Those clasps Paul used are nice though, pity they're not solid brass.

Yes botes, your right there. Those clasps are quite nice for ten bucks though. I've never seen any in solid brass yet. Out of the five I bought I used another on a watch box that is finished but still playing around with the lining.

    Paul/Jacques,

That style of latch is available in solid brass from Jim Carrol. Not sure about the finish, though. It looks like a “brushed” finish in one pic.

    See bottom of the page:

    https://www.cwsonline.com.au/shop/ca...-locks-catches

Note there are two sizes of the solid brass version. There are also chrome versions.

Hi Brian, Nice pick up there, I looked all through that site during the week and didnt notice those. I placed an order with Jim during the week, wish now I would have got one of those to see what they are like. Sometimes photos do not do justice to the actual product. I want to phone him about something else on his site, might have to check those out also.

Looks like the smaller of those catches is only brushed finish but the larger one appears to be polished.
