    Default Installing barrel hinges

I have 8mm barrel hinges and I have never used them before. I am unsure how much spacing there should be between the external edge and the centre of the hole.

The box walls are 12mm so should I just make the hole at the 6mm centre line or am I better off having the hole offset towards the outside of the box slightly?

Or if I put them on the centre line, can i plane a 45 degree chamfer to act as a stop for the lid when opened?

I have used them a couple of times and centered the hinge, as well used stays to act as a stop.

I am sure there are many different ways to accomplish this. This is how Lee Valley shows. http://www.leevalley.com/hardware/pa...=3,41241,41265

    Maybe some help.

Cruzi has given you a lead to a good thread about barrel hinges earlier in the Forum. I have just had a bad experience with 8mm barrel hinges. I installed them in the centre of 12mm box sides to the precise depth (shimmed up a bit after I drilled the holes a half a mm deep). I opened the box carelessly and the back corners rubbed, levered against the hinge, and extracted the barrel enough to leave an unpleasant crack between the bottom and the lid. My advice is to chamfer a bit if you are in any doubt.
I am wondering whether anyone has long-term experience in the use of these hinges. I would hate to think that after a year or two of use they started to loosen and lift out.
The grub screws that expand the barrels a bit are very small and it is hard to put a lot of torque on them with watchmakers screwdrivers.
I am keen to hear about your ongoing experience with these hinges.

The SOSS website info says that the gap to the back should be 0.8mm max. If you don't want them to pull out why not araldite them in?
