Hi All
If you are keen boxmaker within travelling distance to Newcastle NSW there is a great opportunity this weekend to see some great demos, investigate an extensive range of machinery and tools and perhaps purchase some wonderful native and exotic species of timbers.
The Newcastle Woodworking and Hobbies EXPO is being held at the Exhibition Hall (Newcastle Showground) in conjunction with the Craft and Quilt Fair at the adjacent Entertainment Centre. One ticket provides entry to both events, with something for him and her.
Highlights include:
  • Internationally renowned boxmaker Roger Gifkins conducting a 90min demo on how to make his stunning jewelery box. This is 30 mins longer than his demos at last years WWW shows and will allow Roger to show us more of the finer points as well as additional tips and tricks.
  • Newcastle Woodturners demonstrating boxmaking and small joinery for most of each of the three days. At their site you can also purchase prepared timber packs for a box 280mmx 180mm x 80mm. The packs are all cut to size and thickness sanded. They are priced at just $30 and come in a range of timbers including, Tassie Oak, Teak, Aust Cedar, Rosewood, Cypress Pine, Blackwood and Tulipwood. Plans and instructions for the box will also be available.
  • Hardware for Creative Finishes/Boxmakers Brassware have an extensive stand with one of the largest ranges of boxmaking hardware in Australia.
  • The Woodturners will be slabing timber with a Lukus Mill each day with all slabs and boards for sale at very reasonable prices. Species to be slabbed include; Tassie Blackwood, Blackheart Sassifras, Tassie Myrtle, Celery Top Pine and Camphor Laurel. If you speak to the crew they may be able to slab to your specifications.
The show runs from Feb 29 - Mar 2 At Newcastle Showground, 10Am-4:30PM. If you can get there come and have a chat to me and the boys at the boxmaking demo site. Attached photo is of some of our members after our first boxmaking classes last year.
Hope to see you there.
Regards
Greg
