Thread: Box Fit For A Carrot

As part of our work Kris Kringle we needed to gift something that was somewhat connected to the recipient. Well I ended up with the boss who is an interior designer. My first thoughts were for a pencil box, but then I remembered that she always had a carrot for lunch so I turned the pencil box into a carrot carrier. To be honest I had been wanting to try this type of box for a while so I worked backwards to see how I could justify giving it as the Kris Kringle.

The sides are some old borer infected black heart sassafras that I had lying around. Thanks must go to Timberbits for the instructional videos of how to cut the continual sides of the box (http://youtu.be/FJsdUUUD_hs?list=PLZ...zGjGiL_Yo6zcOp). I had intended just to cut box joint sides but once the timber was selected and cut I realised it would benefit from being continuous. I came back inside, watched the video again (I had previously watched the series), and then went back and put the instructions into action. It was much easier than I had expected and ended up with really good results from the mitre saw.

I had originally cut some myrtle burl for the lid, but after the sides were assembled I quickly realised that the sides were now the feature and the burl would have been too much so I substituted for some blackwood. The finish is Oganoil Hard Burnishing Oil ..... but with no burnishing, just wipe on wipe off which has worked well.
