Jewellery Box
Hi All,
While I was in the learning curve of my first box for my daughter, I had a false start, where the resawn sides were left on the tablesaw after thicknessing, and promptly cupped, making them unusable. I started again from scratch, but stickered the rejects in the hope............
A month or 2 later, I revisited them, to find they had stablised, and flattened out, so I was on a mission for brownie points
LOML has been managing for years with a tiny jewellery box I bought for her when we were on honeymoon, so the choice of project was obvious.
The overall construction was identical to my daughters' box, differing only in the marquetry, and the interior. So Blackwood sides, FC bottom and lid core, jacaranda splines, and queen ebony bindings, with silky oak top veneer.
The design was gleaned from the internet, as I was looking for a more realistic effect than I could find in marquetry texts I had . I adapted the pic, to make it a bit more marquetry-friendly, and added sand-shading to the mix. (Actually I didn't use sand, opting instead to take the final assembly after cutting into the silky oak veneer, and scorch it along the edge with my MAPP burner. There were some twitchy fingers, before I finished, but the overall effect cleaned up quite well. Inlay timbers were jacaranda and queen ebony for the stem, with jacaranda and blackwood for the leaves. Queen ebony also provided the leaf stalks.
To make the box jewellery-friendly, I lined the bottom with a piece of the leather Wongo got for me a while back. The lining of the box, as well as the dividers were cut from Australian red cedar.

Hi Alastair
I wish those things would happen to me
I think your box looks great and is finished off really well I have box making in my to-do bucket! Along with bandsaw box making as well.
At the moment I am finishing off a road grader that I started in January this year my work rate is very slow... I wish I moved at the same speed as my gunner rate

Hi Alastair,
Great box, love the way you did the contrast between the sections of the stem.
