    Default Jewellery Box

    Hi All,

Attached are a few images of a jewellery box I was asked to make for my mates daughters 21st birthday. She is no 22..... .
Yes, it took me a while, but free time is a precious commodity these days and he did say there was no rush.

The main body of the box is made from Myall, which came off her grandparents property in NSW who passed away recently, so the box will have some sentimental value for her which is nice. The insert in the lid is Budgeroo, the splines and lid lift are Queen Ebony and the trays are Jacaranda.

There were a few nervous moments in making this box especially when I dropped it on concrete while in the sanding process. First time fitting the 6mm neat/smart hinge so need more practise on those, but I did enjoy the challenge of making it. Like anything, the more you do the easier it becomes.

The box is finished with 3 coat of Kunos Oil, which I'm very impressed with as it made the colors and grain of the Myall really pop. Will be using this finish a lot more on articles I make in the future, its easy to apply and gives a real natural look and feel to the timber.

As always, all comments are welcome as I want to improve my skills and techniques.

    Regards,
    Nev.

I can see why it took you a while! A really nice box with a good choice of timbers. The Jacaranda trays are a good contrast to the main body.
Your mates daughter is a lucky girl, she will treasure that gift for ever.

Well worth the extended time frame. Some striking contrasts in the colours and they work really well together.

    Nev,

A really beautiful box. Congratulations. I think it is very special when the timber has a personal family connection as it does in this case, and I agree with Uncle Al that your mate’s daughter is a lucky girl.

Looking forward to your next project, Nev!

Nice box, really nice box and made from a lot of different woods that a simple kiwi has never heard of, much less come across - I know what Jacaranda is......

I'm interested in the way the name was applied. Can you give us a brief explanation please.

    Hi Rex,
The name was done by an engraver shop. I tried a couple of times but the result was prettyordinary. I know my limitations and have used the engraver before to do the name on her sisters box so it was a no-brainer in the end.

Hi Nev, wonderful job. Do those hinges have a built in stop? If so, where did you get them?
    Thanks,

Lovely box. As for the hinges, I find if you put a slight 45 deg arris along the back edge then you can make the hinge flush with the back. They're so much easier to fit than the butt hinges I find also as you just need a 6mm trimmer bit.
