    Default Jewellery box

Hi folks, I wanted to make something special to present to my eldest daughter on her eighteenth birthday. The day was two months ago but she got it yesterday! Took too long procrastinating on which timbers to use. Settled on a king billy base and flame myrtle sides. Silver banksia for the lid with a couple of huon strips and some cherry plum ends. Was planning dovetail joints but decided my skills weren't good enough and chickened out. Anyhow take a look at the pictures.

Nice work there Wayne, well done. The lid timber looks super. Your daughter should love this.

That's simply stunning Wayne. A great choice of timbers.

Thanks gentlemen, not sure how dark the banksia will get with age but looks good at present.

That looks really specy with that Banksia top. A good way to showcase some of those timbers you are usually selling

Banksia has to be cut right on 90 degrees to the growth rings, true quartersawn, or the medial rays aren't visible as you can see on the inside of the lid. Makes for a low recovery of the best grade timber with only one or two cuts before the rays disappear.

It really is a special timber, but I've never seen it commercially available. I was lucky enough to get some from a tree that was cut down next door. You're right about it needing to be quartersawn. I suspect that as well as being plainer, backsawn would also twist and warp pretty badly.
