Jewellery Boxes
These are two of four jewellery boxes made for my wife, mother and two daughters. The timber is New Guinea Rosewood and the finish china oil with Ubeaut EEE and traditional wax. The corners are mitered and reinforced with splines all in the same material throughout. The boxes received a sealer of shellac prior to the final sand and the colour is nice and even throughout. I'm quite happy with the result, this is about as good as I get so there is plenty of room to develop. I don't know if it shows in the photos but there is nice grain and feature for the size pieces.

How did you go morticing in the hinges ?
Got a few of those but never quite built up enough guts to use them.

The hinges were fiddly, the timber on the side was 11mm and the mortice about 4mm so not much room for error. To cut the mortice I used a bench drill to remove as much waste as possible to get to depth then just cleaned out with a chisel. I used both a 1/8th and 4mm. In the end with a bit of adjustment everything fitted ok.

The lining is felt from Spotlight, its pretty simple to fit. For the base of the box it was cut to size, the bottom of the box had aquadhere brushed on and the felt dropped in and a small piece of dowell (off an old broomhandle) used to roll out the lumps and bumps. The timber used to support the upper shelf was glued at the same time. The top shelf base is thin mdf with the felt glued first up. The box sides are rebated at the base of the sides with a fine slot and the whole lot glued together. That part is a bit crude and relies on the strength of the Aquadhere at the but join. The dividers are glued and fitted over the felt at the same time.

I would use the same hinge again, but it did take a couple of evenings to do the mortices in the four boxes and I am in no hurry to line up for another attempt. I did take it very easy in fear of busting through the side. Originally Posted by RGP
