Wow, that is one beautiful piece of woodwork Greg. I have all the machines and tools to create something like that, but lack the skill and knowledge to achieve a result like you have attained. Congrats on a true heirloom item.

Thanks for all the kind words. In response to some of your posts, I can't take all the credit for this piece. Whilst I was responsible for the design I had a lot of help with the construction from Ron Taylor. Ron is one of the best fine joinery exponents I have seen in many years of association with some of Australias best.
As for the story from conception and design through to the construction process, I have written an article which I hope to have published in the new year. I would however like to briefly talk about Design tools. This piece is totally original from the ground up. (except for the carved drawer pulls which were influenced by some of Neil Scobies work). In order to achieve the high quality we were after it was necessary to completely model each component and produce detailed dimensioned drawings. This was achieved using Google Sketchup ( 3d design software available from Google). By doing this Ron and I were able to resolve all construction and joinery issues prior to putting a saw to any timber. Below is a photo of the model of the cabinet and one of the dimensioned drawings. The only change from the original design to finished product was the size of the fingers in the drawer fronts. Thanks again for the interest.

Google sketchup, u gotta love it, especially since its free!
I do all my designing with it, i'll tinker with different models at night when theres rubbish on the TV. I never bother with the fine details in the model as you have done Greg, just the basic shape & design. Curves can be difficult to get just right & i usually end up changing them a bit anyways.
Thumbs up to both of you, mighty fine job you've done there!

Great work the scarfing (or dovetails its hard to see form the picture above) on the draws ads an interesting design feature that you font see every day nice Sketchup drawing as well
Sketchup has designed and built full homes for me. By far the best software out there for free.
