Jewellery Chest
The client contacted me early in the year about making a jewellery chest for his wife but it took quite a few months for him to work out what was required as he had to take stock and measurements without her knowing, we all know what its like when you move your wife's personal stuff, they know, they suspect, they ask questions which you don't have answers for. He eventually came to the workshop and we finalised a design for the fit out and the key stipulation was to keep it clean and simple with clean lines and sharp edges with the timber making the statement, which i love doing and the reason he chose me for the commission.
While waiting i went on the hunt for something special and finally settled on a 750 x 260 x 70 billet of lovely figured Tasmanian Blackwood from Tasmanian Acoustic Tonewood

The design meant machining to tight tolerances so i set to it, the Blackwood machined well and was easy on the machinery. I chose to have runners with grooves in the drawers. This picture shows runners fitted with dummy sides cut to finalise correct drawer height. I was looking for 1mm gaps all around.

Assembly went well with a loose fitting back to deal with any movement in the sides.

The end result met my high expectations and the client was more than impressed when he collected. The exterior was sanded to 600 and 2 coats of Constantia Organic Finishes wood oil was applied and hand buffed to a beautiful smooth lustre.

That is a really nice chest. Well done
And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

There was no budget, previous to this i had made him a watch box for his son and he paid without asking a price. The Blackwood was $600 delivered and i used all of it as well as a little of my own stock and added an hourly rate.
This was the watch box in Myrtle Burl from the same supplier.
