Default John Tobin, Windemere Woodcrafts, Tasmania

During a recent visit to Tasmania, we were driving north from Launceston up to the mouth of the Tamar River on the north coast of Tasmania when we saw a sign indicating the Windemere Woodcrafts turnoff. So we did the touristy thing and followed the signs a few kilometers inland to come across this showroom and workshop on the Tamar River, run by John Tobin. We were fascinated by his craftmanship, and the 3D marquetry he does. He does all his carving with an ordinary Stanley knife and a homemade bobbin sander, without the oscillation. Some of his large floor cabinets would not be out of place in Bungendore and Tolga Woodworking Galleries.

Worth a visit if you are down that way. All of his work is based on the local flora and fauna.

John pointed us to some amazing chainsaw carvings at nearby George Town, Low Head and Legerwood, which we duly visited. Two of the Legerwood trees were dead Canadian Redwoods ( sequoia timber) . They were all definitely worth a visit
    regards,

    Dengy

and I have added this to our list of places to visit on our next trip to Tassie.

My wife and I visited him many years ago. Bought two of his boxes, one with a lizard (gekko) and another with the flora (acorns).
After talking to him for a while and looking at some of his works in progress, I agreed to send him some of my wood, enough for him to make us a box and heaps to spare for himself. Red cedar, silky etc from QLD.
Posted away and never heard from again.
    My loss.
But his work still sits proudly on display at home.
    Great artist.

Hi Lyle..It is John Tobin here, replying to your comment.Thankyou for visiting my showroom and for purchasing 2 pieces of my work.I saw your comment about sending me some wood and would like you to know that I never received the package of wood that you had sent to me.If I had received it I certainly would have replied to say thankyou and returned the favour. We have had mail go missing over the years as there is also a Windermere Beach down near Hobart and these missing articles are never returned or seen again.

Wow. Thanks for the reply John.
I hope all is well with you. I had thought that maybe you had stopped.
So sad about the packages going missing.
    No big issue.
I am set to retire this year and plan to travel. So Tassie is on the agenda. I'll turn up and "hand deliver" some wood for you. Cut out the postie 😂

Unfortunately Tolga Gallery is no more, closed its doors in mid December 2018. Trevor and Annette Allwood have decided to retire.

Don't I know the feeling, we live in Douglas 4814, but for some reason a lot of our stuff ends up in Port Douglas, you figure? All freight now goes to my wife's work.
John, don't retire as I plan on visiting Tassie when I get old.
    Rgds,

Hi Lyle. Thanks for your reply.Just a note to say that you are more than welcome to visit the showroom on your next trip to Tassie.I am now semi retired and so don't worry about bringing any wood with you although I do appreciate your kind gesture, but at this point in time I have enough wood to keep me going for another life time.Kind regards.John Tobin
