    Default Post office door bank

The door is an antique post office box door. I remember these from when I was a little boy. Mostly all been replaced with aluminum keyed units now. Not nearly as nice. Box is curly maple with bloodwood splines. Used to be a big treat to go down to the post office with my father and he would hold me up and let me work the combination. These banks make for great gifts for little ones.

    Al,
I love the work you do. These money boxes are special. I tried once to source some of the hardware from the US but it never happened. I remember the supplier I tried never answered my email. I think they make a great present for kids, will teach them to save and not spend all their money on tools!

Brilliant idea and box Cisco . When my post box expires I must see if I can nick the door - but mine has a key and I think yours with the combo lock is better .

    Very nice box,
I keep seeing these great boxes made from curly maple and I really like them. I'm in the process now of emailing US and Canadian suppliers to find the cheapest postage cost. I really like the lighter coloured curly maple, like yours. Although i've also seen it called tiger maple becaue it has the stripes.

    You've done well

Tiger maple, curly maple, it's all the same thing. The only difference is how tight the curl is. Once it gets to about four stripes per inch it's sometimes called razor curl. Some people use a water soluable anilyne dye to bring out the curl more while I just use a good coat of BLO or tung oil to darken the curl a little before finishing. To dye curly maple, just mix up a watered down solution of whatever color dye you wish and apply it to the timber. Once it's dry, sand your project back with 220 grit. This removes the dye on the harder part of the timber but leaves the softer parts (the stripes) dyed. Then you can finish with whatever you like.

    Thumbs up

Now that is one smart unit!!!

Love the dark spline keys as a contrast to the Maple.
