Leather lining boxes
Hi. I am trying to figure out the best method for applying leather lining to the interior of boxes. I'm wanting to line both bottom and sides. No matter what I come up with, there is always at least one cut edge visible. Does anyone know a technique to get a high quality finish - or been able to find a web site dealing with it?
I want to leather line a box but I dont want butt joints or seams visible.
Also, I need the name of a supplier of thin, high quality leather - where I can buy smallish quantities. Preferably near Ashfield.
thanks

Leather....hmmmmmmmmmm.........I generally use suede (synthetic definately for lots of reasons) and line my boxes with it. I've used what you would call normal leather to actullay fix to the bottom of my boxes. When I do that I leave 1/8 of an inch from the botttom plywood to the edge of the side, so when I apply the 1/6th leather, I have a nicely finished 1/16th of an inch reveal.
Now to the inside of the box. Basically you can do the sides, bottom or lid all the same way.
I take a pc. of hard (thin ) cardboard and spray adhere a pc. of craft foam which is 1/16th of an inch thick to it. I then cut this pc. to the dimension of the bottom, side or whatever, minus 1/16th of an inch for the leather to be wrapped later. I cut the suede 1.5 inches bigger than this pc. sort of miter the corners and spray adhere this to the cardboard foam combination wrapping the suede over the back side, gluing it too. This pc. should fit snuggly in the bottom. Do the rest the same........
Actually if I were doing the sides, I would do them first, then the bottom so as to keep a nice finished look.
ICN,
Bill

I've got a book by Peter Lloyd where he shows his technique of routing the groove for a ply base but allows enough width for the leather to be glued to the base before it's inserted in the groove. Unfortunately he only lines the base of his boxes.
For the sides, how about routing a shallow recess leaving about 5mm all round the edge then either gluing the lining direct or a technique like Bill explained to make a sort of "raised panel".
The only time I've bought leather was a couple of different colours of suede and I got them from a Saddler.Dan
