    Default Letterbox

We saw the movie 'Inception' a few weeks ago which had a number of sets inspired by Greene and Greene rooms (or filmed in one of their houses), don't know if anybody noticed that too. Anyway it reminded me that I quite like that style so I decided to make a letterbox along those lines. I just finished a deck for a client and kept a number of 140 x25mm Kwilla offcuts for the purpose, some which had a beautiful chatoyance. These photos are at the stage of dry assembly and there's a few things that have to be touched up but you get the idea. Still have to install the secret opening mechanism, then glue up and finish.
I've had enough bridle joints, m&t's and grooves for a while

    Cheers
    Michael

Now that is a letterbox. It has to be the coolest letterbox ever.

I hope it is not in the weather, otherwise it wont last long. My letterbox is box from WRC and it is painted.

Scale that up slightly and I'd gladly move in.

Steady on, it is just a letterbox and it will be out in the weather. I've done my best to construct it to shed any water but time will tell...

I like it. I can only see one problem, the same as my bought tin one, when some idiot sticks junk mail half way in the slot all the rain from the roof gets channelled in and drowns your real mail.

Nice job.....I like the overall design.
Can you remember in the 50's you could get a 2d double bunger that would demolish a tin letter box?
Yours looks like it would withstand any number of those.

And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

We have a no junk mail sign so that has solved that problem, but they still sneak a heap of junk mail in the local rag.

Can't remember the 50's, but I do just remember in the early 70's blowing a tin can over our mango tree with some big fire cracker.

In addition to the cloud lift, Greene and Greene also like to add dark timber inlays and in the letterbox I added some gidgee detailing for my version. Glued up today. The secret door works well too. Finishing over the next few days, probably with spar varnish.

    Cheers

After numerous coats of spar varnish and a repaint of the support the box is now in use and working well. SWMBO actually said she likes it
