With the lockdown now easing the Local Community Club has now been allowed to restart its gymnastic program but after over 4 months of closure’s we need to do some fund raising.

With my wife as Head Coach and Program Co-coordinator she always coming up with creative ideas to keep the club going and running smoothly.

This fund raiser suggestion was something very different for me, could you make a nice letterbox! So the hunt was on for a design/pattern.

I settled on something similar to our own metal letterbox as it has served us very well this past 35 years.

I had some wide secondhand Spotted Gum decking boards in the stash, so through the thicknesser they went taking them down to a little over 1/2” [13mm], along with plugging the screw holes.

I joined two boards, 5” [130mm] wide, glued and biscuited together to give a decent 10” [260mm] width.

The base is an offcut of hardwood flooring.

The box is screwed together and glued with epoxy then the joins are sealed with Starbond Medium Thick CA for waterproofing.

The lid is oversize to also assist with waterproofing.

The finish is another homemade wipe-on-poly but this time I’ve used exterior grade gloss clear as the base, 4 coats.

Wipe-On-Poly – 30% Tung Oil, 40% Clear Gloss Polyurethane, 30% Mineral Turps….

Cheers crowie

Papa Smurf and handy were pretty pleased with the result even before the finish went on!
