    Default Livos oil and Veneer

    Team,

I love using Livos oil natural sealer #244, and for my next creation, I was going to do a veneered top, but have read that veneered timber doesn't like Kunos, is this true, and if so, to quote Prof. Julius Sumner, "Why is it so?"

Looks like Dengue has discovered the same warning in his build. It would be interesting to know their reasons.

I've used it on veneered work, but my veneers are usually thicker than the usual 0.3-0.4 mm of commercial veneers. Mine are usually >0.8mm, and I've never had any problems. I usually use Techniglue to glue the veneers down.

I was actually speaking with Livos Australia this morning and I asked about the issue with veneers as I use veneers quite often in my boxes. Apparently the issue is that very thin veneers could de-laminate when exposed to the oil however Livos said that this problem has never been reported in Australia, but apparently it happened in Germany.

I'm planning on testing this out because I really want to see what Kunos oil is like. I've used Osmo before and Evolution hardwax oil on veneers and so far have never had any de-laminations with them, so I'm not really expecting the Kunos oil to cause de-laminations either.

It probably depends on what type of glue has been used. I haven't used them with veneers, but PVA or hide glue might soften & delaminate.

Oils may make some timbers somewhat translucent as in translucent Nofolk Is Pine bowls. This may also occur with a thin light coloured veneer glued to a dark substrate.
