    Default Log cabin tissue box

Found some oak offcuts around 15mm thick.

To make log effect sorted out a couple of router roundover cutters, 6.3mm and 12mm.

Prepared a scrap piece of timber (meranti) to 12.6mm square and trying the 6.3 cutter.

Cut the four corners and it seems it will work, might distress actual pieces of oak when ready.

A member who works on log cabins on the UKforum is going to let me have some joint and plan details, so will be ready, his cabin full size took three days, mine I think will take longer.

You could stagger the pieces, one short one long and create a box joint effect on each corner. I reckon it would look good.

Another way is to use a cove (I think it is a cove bit) in the router and to route halfway or someway through dowel so that the two dowels will sit nicely at the corners. I can't remember if every dowel is routed or just every second one or the top of each down. By donig this, you'd be able to get the log cabin corner effect I think you might be looking for.

    cheers

Thanks Wendy, I have a cove bit, and I will give that a try later this morning, that illustration looks good as well.

I'll follow this thread with interest as I've got dozens of 16mm tassie oak dowel offcuts to find a use for.

Got the lumber together and sized at 12.6mm, oak nameboard offcuts, and my next session I intend to use a 6.3 roundover bit on the router table, so its going tobe a noisy one.

Jow - if your 'logs' aren't round, then maybe a box bit might be better, i.e. square cuts or rebates - just a thought

Wendy, they are not round, , nor square, after 228 passes over the roundover bit I have obtained a very distressed look. Might be easier with a softer timber than oak, and longer lengths would have meant less burdensome machining.

You have been more than busy with all those pieces. I wouldn't worry too much about perfect rounds. Log cabins themselves are pretty rough constructions with clay and rags stuffed in all the gaps created by the irregular logs. Just let go of your more usual perfection standard and slap this log cabin together with a bit more natural rustic look. I only wish I were 25% as industrious as you are John, you are an inspiration.

You could line the inside of the box to prevent seeing through the gaps.

Switched over to late evening work in the W/S when the heat has cooled down.

    Still around 78Far.

Made a start on the framing.

Made myself a very expensive depth gauge for the log cuts.

To me looks like a stick with a line across.

Then again there are some folk that sell that for a nice profit.

    Exclamation

    Looks good!

Don't envy the clean up bit, however!
