Mahogany box
It's finally getting a bit warmer so I ventured into the garage today to make another box.
I had this piece of figured mahogany lying around, waiting for the perfect project and I decided it's time to use it.
The box is based on a box featured in one of Doug Stowe's books as pictured.
I managed to cut the sides, do the finger joints and glue it up. Also finished the rails for the lid.
Hope you enjoy.
Cheers
Jacques

A few more progress photos for today. Routed the 45 degree slots in the lid, glued in the bottom and started work on the black inlay, feet and lid handle.

Looking good Jacques. Does the lid actually hinge or does it simply get lifted and placed in the recess at the back?

Hi Jacques,
Looking good (yet again)!
What type of timber are you using for the banding, feet and handle, and what did you use to ebonise it?

Thanks Brian. The strips etc are walnut which I tried to ebonise/stain with the paint and stain as per the attached photo. It didn't come out perfect but will do. Once I sanded it down with some steel wool it doesn't look too bad.
Glued them all in today so getting there.
Cheers

Hi Paul.
I must admit, my CNC hardly get any use.
The frame is made in the traditional way, a groove to accept the lid which has a tongue all around. The frame is joined using a mortise and tenon joint on the 4 corners. The 45° recess was an afterthought as I forgot to to that before I glued the lid together. It's just of the many mistakes I made along the way [emoji16]. I did by hand using a guide block/fence on my trim router.
Cheers

Some more progress photos. I think it's now done. All that remains is for the 2nd coat of Osmo Polyx to dry properly. I will then go over it with some steel wool and wax.
I will post the final reveal photos during the week once it's all done.
Cheers

Hi Jacques,
Is that just straight Poly-X on the mahogany? It really highlights the gold toning in the wood doesn’t it?
Looking forward to the unveiling.

Only Osmo Polyx Satin thus far Brian. It's a lovely finish which applies easily. The timber certainly does glow using it [emoji4].
I could have done a better job on the floating tray (it's a bit chunky) but hey... someone will prefer it that way.
By the way, the tray is made from a bit off offcut Sapele I had lying around. It's so similar to the Mahogany that I suppose it doesn't matter. What does the exerts reckon, similar enough?

Jacques,
I wouldn’t have realised the tray was a different timber, so from my point of view yes - definitely similar enough.
As to your feeling that the tray is a bit chunky, twice recently I’ve given away boxes to Di’s friends. In both cases I gave them a choice from a number of boxes and in both cases they chose what I thought of as my least attractive work. Sigh.....
