    Default Mahogany For Box Work

Just curious, what do any of you use mahogany for your box work? How do you like working with it and do you seal it before finishing? Considering picking some up.

I've found mahagony to be a great wood to cut, mill etc. It is an open grain wood, so if you want to finish it w/o grain showing, I would use a grain filler, then start the finishing process.

I have found mahogany to have a grain that tends to change direction across its face, making it a but susceptible to tearing out when planing. Apart from that, it is nice to saw, yields nice endgrain, and is a nice looking wood.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.
