    Default Medal box

Finally on the home stretch and it’s only posting on here that gets me the last little bit. And I probably would’ve been there from 95% to 100% finished if the kids don’t throw a spanner in the works and change plans 5min before going out.

i was heading to Christie’s medals in the city and if that was closed I was going to look for a disposal store for something to fashion into a lid lift, and also a navy ensign for the inside of the lid. But anyway here we are it all it’s glory.

    dimensions 345 x 258 x 98
It was made this size so that the tray could incorporate my fiends full medal strip.

The timbers are Jarrah (I think), Southern Silky Oak for the lid and Hinges and the medal tray splines are Huon Pine as are the tray supports in the base. The Huon was from my friend so as I mention before I had to incorporate it in the box somehow. Also the first set of hinges were Huon but Had to be redone.

Navy Blue velour covered card for linings, and also some naval insignias also to come. Of which I will post some last photos.

however, whilst I was photographing this SWMBO said I don’t think it needs a handle.

thoughts anyone? Suggestions anyone? I had thought of turning a very nondescript button for middle of the font lid face, even though I love the clean lines.

please Le me know, and as you know comments and especially critical is very welcome as it can only make me better.

    Gday Fumbler

Good job, I agree with no handle.
Just a barely detectable button along the front edge would fit in 100%. (imho)

    Hi Richard,

A lovely box and I like the clean understated effect that will allow the medals to be the star of the show rather than the box. If it were my box I wouldn’t be using a knob or lift of any kind but just letting the quality speak for itself.

if you make another like this I think it would look good with a small chamfer around the bottom edge to provide a shadow line to increase the definition between the box and whatever it is sitting on.

A question please: what is converse card?

    Best regards,

    Brian

    G'day Fumbler,

Very nice job - well done.

I too need to make a medal box for myself. I have eight medals which are 'court mounted' using 4 pin/studs to secure them to the coat or jacket. The mounted medals are 180mm wide x 100mm high. Market cost at the moment is close to $1k, and you only get them once. So a medal box needs to both secure and protect them.

My question is how do you secure them in the tray in which they sit. Most appear to just sit in a lined open tray which allows them to slide around. Have seen a few where the medals sit in a recess in the tray bottom to stop the medals moving around but are still loose to some degree. Also most boxes have a fair distance from the top of the medals to the top of the box which allows the medals to move vertically. Have seen a couple with a padded cushion (foam with lining material) to sit above and hold the medals in position. Have seen a couple of boxes where the medals are secured (using the pins from mounting the medals) to a lined cushion which is then placed in the tray.

Either way the medals are not really secure in the box and are prone to moving/sliding around in the box so damage can occur to both the box and medals.

The medals themselves do weigh a little and together with the weight of the box, can result in small accidents, in particular when grandchildren want to look at Grandpa's medals, so I believe a latch of some form is definitely required.

    Nifty

Thanks Brian, some pelican back in the day created spell check and it kicked in. It was meant to read “velour covered card”

thinking about it i I probably should’ve put a finger slit on each side of the box.

i have some ideas and will post for adjudication.

    Nifty,

The medals just lay flat in this tray. Apart this guy who is an old neighbour, I haven’t had much experience dealing with war medals etc, but would be happy to discuss any ideas you may have to help come up with a solution.

That's come up really nice. I like the velour insert in the lid.
Speaking of lid insert, how is the Silky Oak panel fitted to the lid, recessed in or glued in?
Do you have anything to stop the lid falling right back and putting stress on the wooden hinges?

Nifty Nev - are they magnetic in any way?

I did a box for an OBE and AO knight and they had pins that were steel (?)

This allowed me to recess them a bit and pop a magnet behind. That sat perfectly and came out with a slight pop. Most satisfying.

Good thought. This is something you can use all those old fridge magnet advertisements for.

The lid is double rebated if that make sense. First the walls then the lid

The hinges have built in 90deg stops and the lid is actually quite light so stress is minimal. I do have chain that I can attach, but I don’t think it will need it.
