    Default A different method to make boxes

    A few years ago I made 2 boxes......

    ...... using a different method where the sides and framing of the top and bottom were made by hollowing/sculpting a single length of timber which is cut and mitred to wrap around the box giving a great opportunity to display continuous grain. I have wanted to further develop this method and the opportunity arose the other day when I was asked to make a box to store and display a wedding photo album.
    I hollowed a length of Australian red cedar....

    ...... and mitred it to lengths....

    I also cut and rebated the top and bottom from planks of blackbutt. By the end of an easy day, I had the box complete prior to finishing.

    I will certainly use the technique more often but it seems to be best suited to ‘organic’ rather than ‘crisp and geometric’ boxes but really shines when you have that special piece of timber as I did for the boxes at the beginning of the post.
    a rock is an obsolete tool ......... until you don’t have a hammer!
