    Another lesson learnt this evening.

I went to cut the lid off the box and made my first cut. Took the box off the saw to check the depth of the cut (needed to leave a slither of timber left to hold the lid in place). All was good.

Turn the box 90 degrees and cut the side. Picked the box up ... CRAP ... I had cut from the wrong end. So, I now had one cut near the top for the lid and another cut near the bottom for who knows what.

Oh well, this box was only going be for my own use anyway, so I made the same mistaken slice on the other side of the box to match. I then put in a piece of huon to fill the kerf, kind of a feature perhaps. Hopefully it turns out.

The small box in front is another one that I've just started. It's a piece of curly jarrah with a huon pine lid. I haven't learnt my lesson yet and am still using masking tape but I have numbered the pieces clearly, so hopefully I wont make the same mistake again.

Now ... given the thickness of this smaller box is around 8mm, can I still put in splines or is there something else I should do to reinforce the join?

    Thanks,
    Af.

    Hi AB,
There's probably no real need to put splines at the corners unless you particularly want to. The mitres should hold well.

    Regards,

    Rob
