    Very nice.
How is the relief on the sides done? Is it cut on a scrollsaw and applied to the side timber?

    Hi,
Yes, 3mm is resawn off 12mm slightly over length pieces then the two sides and two ends are scroll sawn stuck together, then separated and the inner margins are masked off and finish applied. When done they are glued back together before the miters are cut. That,s where I bombed out, I used a Miter lock bit and got tear out on the end grain (can be seen in photo) and after that much work I could not bring myself to bin it. The photos show the defects more than real life. I probably would have done better with a simple varnish instead of shellac.
    Regards
    Hugh

Live and learn. When using router bits where tearout is likely it pays to feed that end to the bit from the wrong direction for a long enough length to negate the possibility.
However, I'm pretty sure if you gifted this to the right female, young or old, you would win a heart.

    Cheers,
    David

Called a climbing cut. Texts often warn against this, as there can be a tendency for the cutter to grab the work and throw it. However, if you are aware of this, don't take too deep a cut an keep a firm grip of the work, it can be done safely and is, as Aldav says, the way to avoid tearout.

    Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions but the problem is cutting across the grain, not just the end if the cut, because it comes to a point. You can not cut a bit at a time due to the shape of the miter loc cutter. That is probably why they are not very popular, they seemed to be such a good idea.
