Need to find
Giday all, I have been asked by "The Minister for Finance, War and Love" to make a friend a jewellery box, No big deal. OH!!! The Minister wants something really special.
The friends parents (who have passed away some years ago) came from Latvia and so silly me suggested that maybe the panel could be like the national flag of Latvia which is Maroon split with a white stripe. Now here is my problem. Any suggestions of what timber I could use that is Maroon? I thought of purplrheart but not sure. I don't really want to stain the timber a maroon colour. Any suggestios please.

i would say the closest you could get to maroon would be tassie myrtle but dont finish it with sellac. if you just dont finish it then it will stay a very dull colour which is very close to maroon. if you wish to use this try get a peice that has been aged for a long time. not something that has just been milled.

Sure. Bloodwood from Brazil. A very deep, rich red. Hard and heavy. Works nice but blunts tools somewhat. I've got a pile of it and if you let me know how much you need, I'll get some out to you. I need to be getting a box in the post to you very shortly anyway.
Here's a guitar cabinet I built from it last summer to give you an idea of the color.When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Hi Pasho,
Jarra, swamp mahogany or turpentine for the maroon and Scottish sycamore for the white. If you get to the gold coast at all give me a call if you want some of these in veneer 0404000738 I have heaps.

I've got a couple of small pieces of what I believe to be red mahogony David. Don't know if it would be maroon enough for what you want, more reddish to brown but you are welcome to it if you think it might do the job. Would be about 3/4 inch thick, needs running through the thicknesser but is pretty dry and ready to use. Have had it for about 12 months. Give me a ring if you think they might be what you need.
