NG Rosewood and Banksia Nuts
This is a recently completed box made from New Guinea Rosewood and the lid is decorated with slices of Banksia Nuts and the accents are made from Rock Maple. The hinges are courtesy of Aldav and are really a pleasure to use. I like the brass plated screws that are provided with these hinges. The box is fitted with a simple press button latch.
The overall size of the box is 260 mm x 155 mm x 95 mm high and is lined with red pig skin suede. The finish is multiple coats of Wipe on Poly.

Very nice box with something a little different. Are those push button locks readily available?

Hi Dallas,
The push button on this box was purchased from Prokraft in the UK about 5 years ago and with the postage was quite expensive as I remember. I have had it sitting in my shed just gathering dust until I finally opted to use it on this box.Just a couple of weeks ago I went searching on the internet and Lo and Behold….McJings have virtually identical push buttons for $5 each. I have purchased some from McJing and they are great quality and an excellent way to complete a simple box.
Hope this helps

Nice work.
I like how the pigskin goes up the sides of the box, gives it a special look. Did you use cardboard or timber to attach the pigskin to?

+1 for the Banksia slices, Ruddy May I ask how you did this?
How difficult was it to fit the press-button latch? I have a few of these but as yet haven’t fitted one. Your box inspires me to give it a go
Many thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian,
The lid on this box was made from 12 mm NG Rosewood using 4 mitred pieces and then a pocket was milled to house the Banksia. The lid was then rebated all around to fit into the box so there is only 3 mm of the lid showing.
First step with the banksia nut is to cut a flat using the bandsaw. You can then cut another flat side at 90 degrees on the bandsaw. Then set the fence to cut whatever width you decide. Mine started at about 10 of 11 mm. Next step is to cut them to the rectangular size you require. I use the table saw for this and make them suit the size of the pocket that is in the lid. Just make sure you wear a mask when cutting the banksia nuts.
The push buttons are not difficult to fit providing you already have the lid and box correctly hinged. You need to ensure the lid hole for the lid pin is exactly aligned with the box hole that accepts the pin.
Hope this helps
