    Default Northern Silky Oak Box

Here’s some pictures of completed box kit of Northern Silky Oak that I got from Old Croc a few weeks ago with a somewhat unconventional construction method that turned out rather well I think particularly with the mitres and lid alignment.

Not have a table saw and my hand sawing being barely average I decided to see what I could do with my home made jigsaw table. After trimming to size I modified the table to set the jigsaw to 45° and cut the mitres using a made up slide guide. Somehow it worked with only a couple of ends needing a trim to size with an apron plane.

After resetting the jigsaw to 90° I cut the spline slots using stop blocks for consistent length and then cut to separate the lid sides from the base sides after pencil marking to realign.

I then taped the corners of the top and bottom to hopefully prevent glueing them together and firmly taped the top and bottom together. The taped sides were assembled in a band clamp on a flat surface and then taped around in two places leaving one corner free. With the band clamp removed, the sides were laid out flat, glued applied to the mitres, reassembled and back into the band clamp to dry.

With sides still taped together internally and the splines inserted, the top was glued down to the sides and the box sanded before separating the lid from the base which thankfully came away easily. After adding the base and a final sanding the box was finished with U-Beaut White Shellac and Traditional Wax.

That is a clever idea and while reading your description my thoughts were, how do you stop the blade from flexing, then i see the guide and as you prove there is no reason for that setup not to work.

The guide only works for 90° cuts, for 45° bevel cuts the guide carrier has to be removed. Because the material is only 9mm and using a slow feed helped I think.

Yep, you guessed it, from McJing. I just knocked the pin out to separate although I have used as is on a little box I made from scrap.

Lovely job especially with the tools available. I can never get anything more than a rough outline with a jigsaw.
