    Default Novelty box

As the title suggests, this is a little box I made just to try out some Red Pine I was given which I had never seen or used before. It has the look of Cedar but the feel and texture of Pine. The endgrain gave me a little bit of grief trying to shoot the mitres. Even with a very sharp plane it wanted to tear a bit. The lid insert I am lead to believe is Banksia but that is up for confirmation

    The box only measures 125 x 80 x 60

Hey Dallas That's a very neat looking box, well done. I've never found a really good way to do those 5mm barrel hinges. I did notice Col did some a couple of episodes ago. To me the timber looks like western red cedar, but as you say it's pine.

    Very nice box,

    Paul

Thanks Paul. I tried a method for positioning the hinges that Brian (Homey) posted just a little while ago and that seemed to work pretty good for me. I also saw what Col did so yesterday I made up a wooden version of his jig (I didn't have any brass) and am keen to give it a go too. If it works better I might invest in some brass angle just for longevity.
The Red Pine must have been something they used way back when as it came from an old painted cabinet that someone was pulling apart and didn't want to see it get burnt or go to landfill

Nice little box, Dallas. That certainly looks like Banksia in the lid to me, very nice. I'm sure if some of us spent all day at the tip, and were not allowed to scavenge any useful timber, we'd spend most of the day crying.

    Default Very nice box

I have some Japanese brad point bits from JTA they cut a very clean hole for the brass barrel hinges, super glue to fix in, I have tried moistening the end grain to get a clean cut reduces tear out greatly or the other trick is to wet with Bond Crete solution let that dry it holds the fibers together when planning.
