Default First ever box, finally finished

Today I finally finished my first box, i made it as a minor project for my level 3 city and guilds furniture making course. It has been a long time in the making due to only one day a week in college but it is finally done, and it's gone straight into the Somerset guild of craftsmen gallery in the UK

The box is maple and walnut and completely designed by me as a one of piece...not sure my brain could handle making another one like it.

The top opens with a 45 degree sliding dovetail to make it look as though there is one large dovetail on each side and make it look impossible to open. then inside there is a tray that lifts out to reveal four rotating doors into four smaller compartments separated by laminated curved dividers.

It has been one hell of a tough journey, but it's finally finished and I'm extremely happy with the result, and just happy in general that it is finally done.

If that's your first box, I'd love to see what you produce after you've had more practice.

I'm impressed to put it mildly.

That's unbelievable. Awesome attention to detail! There are so many elements to that box it's hard to work out what is going on!!

    Cheers,

A fabulous piece of design and execution. The City and Guilds qualification in the UK is quite something. Do the rotating doors open whether or not the top is on, or does that lock them down somehow?

Thanks for all the great comments everyone, Its always nice to hear that people like your work. I'll post some more close up pics of various parts of it when/if it comes back from the exhibition.

There were times when I wished i had designed something a little less complicated for my minor project, but I guess I'm doomed to a life of never being able to design anything simple and now that it's finished I'm really glad that I made it.

If this is a "minor project", I'd hate to imagine what a major one would be!

Very well done - you've given us some inspiration!
