Organ Box

This is my first post here even though I've been looking for a while. I hope you will forgive my rudimentary style because I've seen some fine work here. Some day I hope I will be a master box maker.

This box is made from salvaged materials. The sides came from an old organ and I believe they are mahogany. The top and bottom are formerly drawer sides. The drawers were salvaged from a pile of furniture damaged by water in the hurricane known as Ike here in the states that hit Houston, Texas. The organ wood was in a pile of warehousing furniture and fixtures being cleared out so a new tennant could move in.

I originally found the mahogany about two years ago and used the wood to test box joints on my new WoodRat. Well it turned out to be so beautiful that I wasn't sure what to do about the top and bottom so it just sat on the bench. I finished it with pure tung oil and wipe on poly and again it sat. Finally, about three weeks ago I went on a "finish all the old projects" binge and decided on the drawer sides for the top and bottom. What you see is the result.

Glad to see you've been bitten by the box bug

Nothing wrong with a bit of rudimentary. I love the story that goes with your box and then I look at it and wonder what part of the organ it came from - Neat!

So what are you going to try next?

Hi Jim!

Welcome to the madness. If I had a dollar for every half-finished box laying around my shop, I could buy myself lunch somewhere nice. Your Woodrat served you well and your joints look fine. The sides on that box appear to be a bit thick - you might have been able to resaw them and made two boxes. Other than that it looks just fine. Mahogany is one of my favorite timbers and takes a finish well as you've demonstrated.

Thanks for the comments guys. The sides are thick because I just took a piece of the organ wood and started carving box joints. I didn't even think I would end up with a box at the time. After I saw how good it came out, I cut some more pieces and finished the box sides. lol

I have other boxes of equal skill level that I'm sure ya'll wouldn't care to see posted here if you could see them first that is. Anyway, I'm working to improve my skills and hope I'll have something better soon.

Hi Jim, welcome to the forum, nothing wrong with a good solid box for your first.

I don't know which organ is meant to fit in it though!!!
