    Default Ornamental Cherry Box

Well, life has been busy with work and the kids soccer but I have found time to get a couple of boxes done. This one as the description says is from a tree I saw my neighbor taking down. It was an incedably beautiful tree that had sickened and was dying. It was commisioned from someone who recently lost a special show dog and wanted an urn for the ashes. The top is made to hold a picture of the dog.
This box is all made from an ornamental Cherry tree that was rescued from a neighbors yard. The miter keys are Bubinga. Being a type of Cherry, the box will darken with age and sunlight. The dimensions areapprox. 6"x4"x3.5" tall. The lid is a frame style and is made to hold a picture. It is finished inside and out with a coat of drying oil. The outside of the body and the entire lid are French polished with shelac. The whole box was then buffed with a coat of Canuba wax. Hinges are made by Brusso. The liner is a synthetic suede and will not tarnish silver.
As a side note, I just went up the street and showed the box to my neighbors and found out that it was a very special tree to them. They asked if I had enough of the wood to make them 2 stool seats to replace some wicker ones they have. After looking at the seats, I think it may be possable although a definate challenge. I am up to it though just so I can do a good deed for some really nice people.

P.S. The lid is not twisted in the top view. That is an optical illusion.

Very nice! Nice to make something special for them out of a tree that has memories for them.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Boy have I been away too long. I've missed you all. Work has put me in overdrive but I've been able to get back to some boxmaking of my own.

I always enjoy seeing your boxes. Time for some more WIP's?

Excellent Gecko, I like that box a lot! Bill, definitely love seeing your WIP's anytime. Finally done with my kitchen remodel and now I can have some time to make a few boxes myself
